Modelling and Simulations of Thrombus Growth

Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of blood through the circulatory system. Blood itself, even without considering its biochemistry and coagulation, is an extremely complicated fluid. It exhibits many unique properties and its behavior is not yet fully described and understood. Blood coagulation involves various mechanisms acting at a wide range of spatial and time scales. Due to the multi-scale nature of this phenomena and the strong interference between the clot formation and the blood flow, it is important to apply coupling methods which can reduce the use of particle interactions to the regions where they are strictly necessary, leaving the simulation in the rest of the domain to a continuum or fluid solver. The idea behind this project is to develop such numerical methods.
